How to Get Title For a Trailer and Trailer Registration

Whether you buy or rent a trailer for your business, all must be registered. Only then will the state allow them to drive on highways.

Title for a Trailer

At DMV, the process of title for trailer begins, but if you want to save time, you can complete the forms online. Whether you bought or leased the trailer, the previous owner, seller, or lessor should have finished transferring the title into your name. This shows your ownership of the trailer. If you bought the brand-new trailer from the dealer or manufacturer, a title application must be filed.

Registering Your Trailer

The DMV evidence of ownership and the completed registration application are the only requirements for trailer registration. It will be necessary for you to show proof that you have paid all taxes and that your trailer is properly covered by insurance.

Cost Estimation for Trailer Title and Registration

$55 is the title fee if your trailer is free of liens. Based on weight, annual trailer costs are as follows: Trailers above 5,000 pounds are charged an additional cost of $18 per 1,000 pounds, in addition to the following rates: $15 for up to 1,000 pounds, $20 for 1,001 to 2,000 pounds, and $40 for 2,001 to 5,000 pounds.

Please keep in mind that “apportioned registration” is necessary for you to move cargo across states. You must finish this registration in your home state to travel through other states without requiring additional permits or registrations. No matter where you operate, you must pay fees based on the miles you drive in each state.

Ins and Outs of Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return

Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax In addition to your regular business taxes, carriers are required to submit an annual heavy highway use tax return to the IRS for operations involving vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more on public highways. Operators of heavy vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are required to file an annual federal tax known as the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (HVUT). The gross weight of a taxable vehicle is determined by following:

  • the weight of the vehicle when fully equipped and unloaded;
  • the weight of the attached trailer or semi-trailer;
  • and the load capacity of the vehicle and attached trailer or semi-trailer.
